Below has nothing to do with this JB CD, but it has an interesting little
tidbit about "The Exit Inn" and song-writers. It is from an interview
with John Hiatt

John Schoenberger: Songwriting was really how your career began, wasn't it?

John Hiatt:  "Yes. I started my professional songwriting career in 1971.  I
had a tape of some songs I had written while I still lived in Indianapolis,
so I picked up my guitar and brought it and my tape to Nashville.  When I
got there, I played it for about half a dozen publishing companies and
nobody batted an eye.  I was sorta down and gettin' desperate (I was
running out of money), so I decided to go to one more publishing company -
Tree Publishing.  When I got there, Buddy Killen asked, 'So do you have a
tape?' Well, I thought of my little tape that had been batting zero, so I
said, 'No, I don't have a tape, I'm just gonna play 'em for ya.' I played
three or four songs and he seemed to really like it.  So, I started to
write songs for Tree at $25 a week!  "During this time, there was this
little club happening in Nashville where all the songwriters came to play
their songs.  It was called The Exit Inn. Guys like Guy Clark, John Prine,
Jimmy Buffett and Chris Gantry were hanging around there.  Interacting with
them and playing on stage sorta became my creative learning ground.  You
see, at the publishing company the atmosphere was different.  That was more
structured, with expert craftsman applying their skills in a very
professional and very precise way.  "At that time, there were literally
classics being written right under my nose.  You know, country songwriters
who I very much admired:  guys like Curly Putnam who wrote 'Green Green
Grass of Home,' or Bobby Braddick who wrote 'He Stopped Lovin' Her Today'
and 'D-I-V-O-R-C-E.' Great, great songs!  And so I learned a lot from that.
As I look back on it, I don't think I fully realized what level their
songwriting was happening on, but by just being there, some of it rubbed
off on me."
